One of the seemingly most controversial food topics that has emerged on the internet over the past few years is whether or not it’s okay to enjoy pineapple on pizza. Some call it an abomination, others (like this writer), happen to enjoy the sweet/savory contrast (come at me). You could only imagine how naysayers would react if the pizza in question weren’t Hawaiian, but rather roasted carrot pizza.
While legions of eaters would likely protest such a pizza, there would be one expert proponent: Mayor of Flavortown himself, Guy Fieri. In an episode of Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, Fieri lauded the roasted carrot pizza of Houston’s Weights + Measures, calling it one of the top 3 most unique pizzas he’s ever had.
The episode entitled Cookin’ from Scratch aired on the Food Network on September 3, 2021 shows Fieri visiting a number of lauded restaurants including Hawaii’s Hilo Bay Cafe in Hawaii, and Houston’s Fresco Cafe Italiano as well as Weights + Measures.
Weights + Measures is a Midtown restaurant, bar, and bakery. Housed inside a revitalized ’50s industrial warehouse, the restaurant is known for its Chorizo Carbonara, French Toast & Fried Chicken, and Roasted Carrot Pizza.
“This is weird,” Fieri says, as then Chef Fernando Rios begins preparing the carrots. In preparing the carrots for the pizza, Chef Rios adds salt, pepper, orange zest, butter, orange juice, honey, and olive oil.
Following which, the chef separately prepares the dukkah – a Moroccan spice, comprised of almonds, sesame seeds, cumin, hazelnuts, black peppercorn, coriander, fennel – which are cooked in the oven, then grinded down, to be used as garnish. For the final pizza, the chefs adds a base of soubise, gruyere cheese, the carrots, and Fresno peppers for heat. As a final touch, the chef sprinkles the top of the ready pizza with dukkah.
“Outstanding”, Fieri says. “The tang of the gruyere. The sweetness of the caramelised carrots. The spice of the Fresno…. it’s giving me goosebumps – that’s got to be in the three most unique pizzas I’ve ever had in my life”.

“I tried it just because I wanted to prove it wrong,” Fieri says. “I was proved wrong”.
As of January 2026, the restaurant is head by Chef Omar Pereney alongside Chef Sahira Malherbe. Weights + Measures is located at 2808 Caroline Street. The restaurant is open from 11 am – 9 pm Tuesday through Thursday; 11 am – 10 pm on Fridays; 9:30 am – 10 pm on Saturdays; and from 9:30 am – 3 pm on Sundays.
