An often-made complaint about Houston is it’s lack of walkability. Though it’s true that the fourth largest city in the United States might lack certain pedestrian access as available in other major U.S. cities, it’s clear that city officials and developers have got the hint. Among other ongoing developments meant to increase pedestrian connectivity in the city, is the Uptown Memorial Park Trail and Bridge. Set to begin construction by 2026, the project would connect two of the hottest neighborhoods in Houston with a series of bridges, walkways, and paths.

First announced in 2023, the Uptown Memorial Park Trail & Bridge Project is a concept from Uptown Houston. The project is budgeted at around $22, after receiving an $18.5 million grant from the Texas Transportation Commission. The trail and bridge project is part of a larger Memorial Park Master Plan, including the Eastern Glades and the Kinder Land Bridge & Prairie which is intended to facilitate transportation for pedestrians and cyclists in a scenic environment.
As for specifics, the project will see the construction of a suspended 350-foot bridge over Buffalo Bayou along with a 156-foot truss bridge. Additionally, the project will feature an 8 – 10 foot pathway along Uptown Park, elevated boardwalk system, and trail crossing Woodway Drive.

“By adding to the active urban lifestyle so many people desire today, it will create easy access to the park for thousands of Uptown residents and visitors,” the project website reads. “It promisses to be a vibrant addition to the community, promoting healthy, physical activity, exercise, and recreation in a beautiful and natural setting.”
Developers plan to begin construction on the project by 2026 with a majority of construction to take place after the World Cup. The projected completion date of the Uptown Memorial Park Trail & Bridge is Q1 2027.
