There’s a latke to like here. Kenny & Ziggy’s New York Delicatessen Restaurant, an institution begun in 1999, is opening up a spiffy new spot in Houston on Wednesday, February 2.
Kenny & Ziggy’s is a New York Jewish deli owned and operated by Ziggy Gruber. Coming from a long-line of deli owners, Ziggy, along with partner Kenny Friedman, imbues the Houston deli with the longstanding tradition of New York delicatessens.
Here, patrons can find New York deli classics such as pastrami on rye (triple smoked), lox and bagels, Roumanian steak, kishkes, latkes, Matzo Ball Soup, handcrafted all beef hot dogs, an endless list of stellar sandwiches, and much more.
This past January, Kenny & Ziggy’s shuttered their two-decade-old location at 2327 Post Oak in preparation for the opening of their bigger, and bolder spot down the street.
The new-and-improved Kenny & Ziggy’s will be located at 1743 Post Oak Blvd, formerly occupied by Luby’s. In this larger space, the deli hopes to retain its traditional atmosphere – from its red booths to framed family photos – all while supplying its patrons with a grander experience hence their addition of a brand new bar and old school soda fountain.
Here, kiddos can get their fix of milkshakes, sundaes, and banana splits, while the adults in the room can get a taste of its new cocktail menu curated by Alba Huerta – owner of Julep. Such features include, among others, an eggless, cream-less Egg Cream; a pastrami-infused bourbon Old Fashioned; and a Hammeredtaschen spritz made with Champagne, tequila, raspberry, prune, and apricot.
“We are what we are. Everything I do always has an Eastern European-Jewish slant to it,” Gruber said. “Can I make it look a little more hip and modern? Yes, we can reinvent what’s there.”
Kenny & Ziggy’s is opening their new location at 1743 Post Oak Blvd on Wednesday, February 2. Their hours are 8 am to 9 pm daily.
